What the Word Counter measures
Paste or type text into the box and the page updates the counts immediately. It reports words, characters, sentences and an estimated reading time without sending the text to a server for the calculation.
How words and sentences are identified
Word counting is based on non-empty text separated by whitespace. Sentence counting uses punctuation patterns as a practical estimate. That works well for ordinary prose but may count abbreviations, code, bullet fragments or unusual punctuation differently from a word processor.
Reading-time estimate
Reading time is an approximation based on a typical words-per-minute assumption. Actual reading speed varies with language, complexity, formatting and the reader.
Useful applications
- Checking article, essay or assignment length.
- Estimating whether social or marketing copy fits a target length.
- Comparing drafts after editing.
- Getting a quick reading-time estimate before publishing.
Privacy
The counting logic runs in the browser. Avoid pasting confidential material into any online tool unless you are comfortable with the page and browser environment you are using.
