Adding VAT and extracting VAT from an inclusive amount

The VAT rate on this page is deliberately editable. Choose whether the amount you entered is excluding VAT or already includes VAT, then CalcNator calculates the net amount, VAT portion and gross amount.

If the amount excludes VAT

VAT = Net × rate
Gross = Net × (1 + rate)

If the amount includes VAT

Net = Gross ÷ (1 + rate)
VAT = Gross − Net

When extracting VAT from a tax-inclusive price, multiplying the gross price directly by the headline VAT percentage is not the same calculation. The inclusive amount already contains both the net value and tax.

Check the tax treatment

VAT rules can depend on jurisdiction, date, product type, exemptions and whether a business is registered. This tool does not determine whether VAT legally applies. Confirm the current rate and treatment relevant to the transaction.

See VAT Calculations Explained for worked examples of adding and removing VAT.
