Planning the monthly amount needed for a savings goal
This calculator works backwards from a target. It considers your current savings, the time available and an assumed annual return, then estimates the monthly contribution needed to reach the goal.
How the estimate is built
The current balance is allowed to grow at the entered rate. The remaining target is then funded by a series of equal monthly contributions using a future-value-of-an-annuity calculation.
Why the return assumption matters
A higher assumed return lowers the calculated monthly contribution, but it also adds uncertainty. For a cautious plan, compare a lower-return scenario with your expected scenario. If the goal is essential and the time horizon is short, relying on a high investment return can make the plan fragile.
Practical ways to use the result
- Compare reaching the same target in three years versus five years.
- Test how adding more money today changes the required monthly saving.
- Run a 0% return scenario to see the contribution required without investment growth.
