Currency Conversion Explained: Exchange Rates, Spreads, Fees and Timing
Learn why a currency calculator's reference rate can differ from the amount offered by a bank, card issuer or money-transfer provider.
What an exchange rate means
An exchange rate describes the relative value of two currencies. If a pair is quoted as 18 units of currency B for 1 unit of currency A, converting 10 units of A at that reference rate gives 180 units of B before any spread or fee.
Rates can be represented in either direction. The inverse of 18 is about 0.0556, so direction must be handled correctly.
Reference rates are not guaranteed transaction rates
A currency data service can provide a latest-available reference rate, while a bank, card network or transfer company may quote a different customer rate. Providers can include a spread between buying and selling rates and may charge separate transaction fees.
For this reason, CalcNator's converter should be used as an estimate rather than a promise of the exact amount you will receive.
Why timing matters
Foreign-exchange markets move and data providers update on different schedules. A timestamp helps you understand when the reference data was last updated. 'Latest available' should not be confused with a tick-by-tick institutional trading feed.
If a transaction is time-sensitive, check the final provider quote immediately before confirming.
How to compare transfer options
Compare the final amount received, not only the advertised exchange rate. A provider with an attractive displayed rate may charge a fee, while another may build more of its cost into the rate.
Use the calculator to establish a reference estimate, then compare that with each provider's final quote and disclosed fees.
